Experiencing Life on the Sea

Day 1: Departure Day

Sailing away from the Barcelona port, the cries of the gulls grew fainter as we ventured further into the cerulean embrace of the Mediterranean. Our vessel, a sleek 45-foot Beneteau Oceanis Yacht, was our new home for the next few weeks. As we watched the Spanish coastline recede, the anticipation was palpable. This was the beginning of our Mediterranean sailing odyssey.

Day 4: Arrival in the Balearic Islands

Slicing through the waters towards the Balearic Islands, the striking cliffs of Mallorca gradually took shape on the horizon. After mooring in the stunning port of Sóller, we explored the labyrinthine streets of the charming old town, sampling local delicacies like ensaimadas and sobrasada. The night was spent under the stars, lulled to sleep by the soft lullaby of the sea.

Day 8: Sardinia’s Enchanting Coasts

From the Balearics, we sailed towards Italy, aiming for the sun-baked shores of Sardinia. The Costa Smeralda, with its jewel-like waters, provided us with a splendid backdrop for snorkeling. The evening found us in a rustic seafood restaurant in Alghero, indulging in aragosta alla catalana (lobster salad) and a glass of local Vermentino wine.

Day 12: Captivating Corsica

Moving on to France's island gem, Corsica, we were mesmerized by the island's rugged beauty and breathtaking landscapes. A hike through the Scandola Nature Reserve revealed its unique flora and fauna, while an afternoon spent in the historic city of Bonifacio, perched atop imposing limestone cliffs, was a trip highlight.

Day 16: The Eternal City

Next on our list was the eternal city of Rome. We docked at Ostia and took a day trip into the city. Stepping into Rome’s ancient history at the Colosseum and the Forum, followed by a visit to the Vatican City, was nothing short of awe-inspiring. We treated ourselves to a traditional Roman dinner, cacio e pepe and a sumptuous tiramisu for dessert, in Trastevere.

Day 20: Enchanting Greece

Sailing southeast, we landed on the sun-soaked shores of the Greek island, Santorini. The striking contrast of the white Cycladic buildings against the deep azure sea left us speechless. We sampled a traditional Greek feast of moussaka and dolmades in a quaint taverna, overlooking the breathtaking caldera.

Day 25: Turkish Delights

Our final stop was the Turkish city of Bodrum. Here, we wandered through the bustling local markets, absorbing the exotic sights and smells. A visit to the impressive Bodrum Castle and the ancient Mausoleum at Halicarnassus gave us a taste of the city's rich history. Our journey culminated with a delightful Turkish dinner, sampling meze and sipping Raki as we reminisced about our Mediterranean adventure.

As we sailed back towards Barcelona, we had a newfound appreciation for the tranquil simplicity of life at sea. Our journey across the Mediterranean had not only taken us to breathtaking destinations but had also given us a taste of the rich tapestry of cultures that span this historic sea. A sense of peace washed over us with the realization that no matter how far you sail, the sea is always a home waiting to welcome you.

So, here's to all the sea-lovers and adventurers out there: the Mediterranean is a siren, singing her sea-song, beckoning you to explore her depths and discover her secrets. Happy sailing!
